A bankroll is not your savings, your rent money, or money you need for bills. It is a separate amount set aside purely for betting, with the full understanding that it could be lost. That separation is the foundation of every other rule, because if the money matters for daily life, every loss feels like a crisis and every decision becomes emotional. Decide the amount honestly, write it down, and keep it apart from your everyday funds.

There is no universal correct bankroll size, because it depends on your income, your expenses, and your comfort with risk. What matters is that losing the whole bankroll would be disappointing but not harmful. If losing it would cause real financial stress, the amount is too large. Many experienced bettors suggest starting small and only increasing the bankroll from winnings or from a planned, affordable top-up, never from money borrowed or diverted from essentials.

Once you set the bankroll, treat it as a working fund, not as a target to double. The goal of a bankroll plan is to keep you betting long enough to learn, to enjoy the process, and to avoid ruin, not to turn a small amount into a large one quickly. That mindset shift, from chasing a big win to protecting the fund, is what makes a plan sustainable.

Percentage staking has a built-in safety feature. As the bankroll shrinks during a losing run, stakes shrink too, which slows the decline. As the bankroll grows during a winning run, stakes grow modestly, which lets winnings compound without reckless jumps. Fixed cash stakes do the opposite: they become a larger and larger share of a shrinking bankroll, which is how losing runs turn into busts. If you remember one rule from this guide, make it this one.

Flat staking, meaning the same percentage on every bet, is a good default for most bettors because it removes emotion from stake decisions. Variable staking, where you bet more on selections you feel more confident about, can work, but only if your confidence ratings are honest and tracked. Most bettors overrate their confidence, so if you use variable stakes, cap the range tightly, for example between one and three percent, and review whether your bigger stakes actually perform better over time.

Losing runs are normal, even for good bettors, and your plan should assume they will happen. Decide in advance what you will do during a losing run: keep stakes the same percentage, take a day off after a set number of consecutive losses, or pause and review your recent bets for mistakes. Having that rule written down before the losing run starts makes it far easier to follow when emotions are high. Without a rule, the temptation is to increase stakes to win money back quickly, which is the fastest route to losing the bankroll.

Winning runs need rules too. After a good week, it is tempting to increase stakes sharply or to withdraw winnings and then redeposit them to chase more. A steadier approach is to let the bankroll grow gradually, review whether the wins came from good decisions or good luck, and only adjust stakes when the bankroll itself has changed enough to justify it. If you take winnings out, treat that as a separate decision, not as permission to bet bigger with what remains.

Tilt, the emotional state after a bad beat or a frustrating loss, deserves its own safeguard. If you notice yourself betting on sports you do not follow, adding legs to parlays to recover losses, or feeling angry while placing bets, stop for the day. No betting plan survives tilt if you keep betting through it. A short break, a walk, or a review of your records the next morning will almost always lead to better decisions than another bet placed in frustration.

A simple record is the most underrated part of a bankroll plan. For each bet, note the date, the selection, the odds, the stake as a percentage, and a one-line reason. Once a week, review the record: which types of bets are winning, which are losing, and whether you followed your stake rules. That review turns betting from a series of isolated guesses into a process you can improve, and it makes it obvious when discipline is slipping before the bankroll shows it.

Set review points for the bankroll itself, such as monthly check-ins, rather than reacting to every single result. At each check-in, ask whether the bankroll size still fits your finances, whether your stake percentage still feels right, and whether betting is still enjoyable. If any answer is no, adjust the plan. A plan that is never reviewed becomes either too cautious or too reckless as circumstances change.

Finally, use the responsible-gambling tools available to you: deposit limits, loss limits, time limits, and time-outs. Set them when you are calm, not after a loss. Bet only what you can afford to lose, never borrow to bet, and never chase losses. If betting stops being fun or starts causing stress, seek support from a responsible-gambling service and step away.
