Your bankroll is the total amount of money you have set aside for betting, and it should be money you can afford to lose without affecting rent, bills, or essentials. That separation is the foundation of everything else, because once betting money mixes with everyday money, every loss feels like a crisis and every win feels like income. Decide the bankroll amount in advance, keep it in a separate account or tracking sheet if that helps, and never top it up in the heat of a losing run to chase losses.

A unit is a standard stake size, usually set at 1 to 2 percent of your bankroll, and it turns every bet into a comparable decision rather than a gut-feel amount. If your bankroll is 500, a 1 percent unit is 5, so a standard bet risks 5 and a confident bet might risk two units, or 10. Using units stops you staking 50 on a hunch after a few wins and 5 on a well-researched pick after a few losses, which is exactly the inconsistency that ruins most casual bettors.

Flat staking, betting the same one or two units on every selection, is the simplest and most recommended approach for beginners, because it is easy to track and it limits damage during losing streaks. Percentage staking, where the unit size moves with the bankroll, automatically reduces stakes as the bankroll falls and increases them as it grows, which protects you further but requires regular recalculation. More aggressive systems that double stakes after losses may look clever in theory but can wipe out a bankroll in a short bad run, so they are best avoided.

Losing streaks are normal even for good bettors, and bankroll management exists to survive them. A bettor winning 55 percent of even-money bets, which is a strong record, will still hit runs of five or six losses fairly often over a season, and without unit discipline those runs can halve a bankroll. Accept streaks as part of the process, review your record over hundreds of bets rather than days, and never increase stakes to recover a loss quickly, because that is how a normal downswing becomes a disaster.

Record-keeping turns bankroll management from a good intention into a working system. Log every bet with the date, event, market, odds, stake in units, and result, and review the log weekly or monthly to see where you actually make or lose money. Many bettors discover that one league, market, or bet type accounts for most of their losses, and cutting that leak improves results more than finding a new winning angle. A simple spreadsheet is enough, and honesty in the log matters more than fancy analysis.

Set rules before you start and write them down: a maximum stake per bet, a daily or weekly loss limit after which you stop, and a rule for when you withdraw profits or resize units. For example, you might stop for the day after losing five units, resize units only at the end of each month, and never bet while tired, emotional, or under the influence. Rules feel restrictive in the moment, but they are what keep a hobby enjoyable over a full season instead of stressful after a single weekend.

Please bet responsibly: betting should be entertainment, never a way to make money you need, and no staking plan can turn a losing strategy into a winning one or guarantee profits. Set deposit and time limits with your bookmaker, take breaks, and seek help from a gambling support service if betting stops feeling fun or starts affecting your finances, relationships, or wellbeing. A well-managed bankroll protects your enjoyment of sport, and walking away is always an option.
