Purdue heads west to face UCLA at the Rose Bowl on Saturday, September 19. Kickoff is at 11 p.m. ET on BTN, with the Bruins looking to improve to 3-0 under new head coach Bob Chesney.

UCLA beat San Diego State 28-10 last week after the teams went into halftime scoreless. Purdue is 1-1 following a double-overtime loss to Wake Forest, despite another productive outing from its offense.

UCLA’s running game gives the Bruins a dependable way to finish drives. Wayne Knight carried 13 times for 97 yards against San Diego State and scored three rushing touchdowns. He has scored three rushing touchdowns in each of UCLA’s first two games.

Knight does not need every possession to produce a long run to affect this matchup. His ability to finish near the end zone has already turned scoring opportunities into touchdowns. UCLA can keep giving him chances without making its passing game responsible for every score.

Purdue has its own productive back in Devin Ijeboi. He rushed for 114 yards and three touchdowns last week and added six catches for 42 yards. Through two games, he has 201 rushing yards and four rushing scores, giving the Boilermakers another option alongside Ryan Browne.

Browne has thrown for 646 yards while completing 77.5% of his passes this season. Those numbers deserve more respect than a simple assumption that Purdue will struggle because it is traveling west. The Boilermakers have been moving the ball, and UCLA needs to prevent that efficiency from becoming sustained touchdown drives.

My projected 14-point margin lands directly on the spread. That makes the total more appealing than forcing an ATS wager. I favor UCLA at home, but a straight-up prediction does not automatically justify laying two touchdowns against an offense that has started this efficiently.
